Doctoral Practicum at University Health Services
Welcome to our University Health Services Practicum Training Program! I appreciate your interest in our practicum training and hope that the information provided throughout our website will be helpful in determining if this program is a good fit for you. Our center is committed to the highest standards in training and strives to help you develop to your full potential as a competent mental health provider.
This practicum training program will provide you with experience in initial assessments, individual counseling, group counseling and the option of crisis intervention. It is a one year commitment for 20 hours a week. The requirements of those 20 hours are outlined in the Practicum Program Overview. This practicum is a paid position through University Health Services and is eligible for tuition reimbursement if you qualify as a Texas A&M student. Supervision is provided by American Psychological Association (APA) doctoral interns (who are themselves supervised by licensed psychologists) and by senior staff (psychologists and licensed professional counselors). All sessions are video recorded for review by supervisors. Practicum counselors may also have opportunities to participate in additional university counseling center activities including conferences, outreach, and development of psychoeducation materials.
The practicum at University Health Services requires that practicum counselors have completed a minimum of one supervised training experience providing individual counseling before starting our training program.
The applicant interview will include questions related to your application packet, previous experience and expectations of a practicum at University Health Services. We may also ask you to review a brief vignette and provide a case conceptualization and initial thoughts on treatment strategies. Our interest is in obtaining some understanding of your conceptualization skills and reasoning skills in approaching your work with clients.
If you have any thoughts or questions about this application process, please let me know. My goal is to provide you with information that may be helpful in your decision making process and I hope you will consider applying to our practicum program. Again, I appreciate your interest in our program and look forward to receiving your application packet should you feel that this would be a good fit for you.
Best,
Rakhi Sen, PsyDDoctoral Practicum Coordinator
